These files, previously only available on old faded microfiche sheets at a small number of New York libraries and in the Manhattan branch of NARA, will now finally be available on the Internet, for free, forever! The data for the years Hey, they're really big files, more than GB in total, and it's just taking a really long time to upload everything.
Note that this data does not, for the most part, include New York City births.

The Florida Department of Health in Hamilton County serves as the county's vital records office for birth and death certificates. For certificates from other states visit the State Office of Vital Statistics. To protect the privacy of sensitive information and to prevent identity theft, birth certificates are not public records and the cause of death on a death certificate is not public record.
As required by state law, we restrict access to these certificates, but they are readily available to the individuals, family members and guardians or beneficiaries.

Currently, our office can only provide death certificates for deaths that occurred in Hamilton County from through the present. Death certificates for a person who died prior to , whether in Hamilton or any other Florida county, can be obtained from the State Vital Statistics Office.
To Request a Death Certificate
Death certificates typically contain information on the cause of death, the decedent's mother's maiden name, and where the person was buried. The person's Social Security number, which is also on the form, is already redacted and not made available to the public. James Smith , president of the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information , said death certificates have been available to the public since Colonial times.
These documents shouldn't be kept secret. Tom Hennick , an attorney with the state's Freedom of Information Commission , said, in general, death certificates are public records and should be released. He was unable to comment further, however, because of a pending complaint before the commission filed against the Newtown Town Clerk's Office by the New York Post. A reporter with the Post filed the complaint in late February after being denied access to the death certificates because the information was "disturbing," according to the complaint.
An attorney representing the town, with the law firm Cohen and Wolf, issued an opinion in response to the Post's request stating that the public is only allowed to view death and marriage certificates that are "at least one hundred years old.
